New Employee Orientation

To create a warm welcome, ±¬ÁÏTV Human Resources hosts a New Employee Orientation on your first day that covers important topics such as payroll, benefits, policies, organizational structure, campus safety, etc. The orientation includes a tour of the college to connect you to others on campus and lunch at the ±¬ÁÏTV Café with a mentor from your department.

A few day-of activities to consider in preparation:

  • Campus walking tour (less than 1 hour)
  • Professional headshot courtesy of ±¬ÁÏTV Marketing and Public Relations
  • Take ±¬ÁÏTV employee ID photo *Must have state/federal picture ID

After lunch, you will take a campus tour and return to Human Resources computer lab to review the employee portal.Ìý At the end of orientation, approximately 3 p.m., we will release you to your department unless you are a supervisor.

On your second day, you will attend a Total Rewards (Benefits) orientation from 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. to review benefit options, finalize selection, and complete enrollment.

If your position includes budgeting responsibilities or you are a supervisor, there is a third day requirement to attend budgeting training from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. on Zoom.

If you are a supervisor, you will receive an Outlook calendar invite later to return to Human Resources for New Supervisor Employee Orientation. This orientation will cover important topics related to your management role at ±¬ÁÏTV: compliance with policies, approving leave, and timesheets, creating inclusive work environments, and building cohesive teams through coaching.

When & Where: New Employee Orientation occurs every two weeks, on the first day of each pay period. We start at 8 a.m. in John Massey Center (JMC), Room 131; here is a campus map to help.

What is a Mentor: A mentor is someone from the employee’s department (or closely related department) who can connect with an employee on their first day, help ensure their workspace is prepared, provide ongoing support and information about the day-to-day operations in a new hire’s area. A mentor is a resource for the new employee and helps them feel welcome and included as they begin their professional journey at ±¬ÁÏTV!

Role of the Mentor:
•ÌýÌýÌý Greet on the first day and attend mentor/mentee luncheon
•ÌýÌýÌý Ensure workspace is prepared
•ÌýÌýÌý Provide information for the new employee on day-to-day tasks, policies, procedures, etc.
•ÌýÌýÌý Facilitate the socialization process
•ÌýÌýÌý Be a resource on unwritten policies, workplace culture and norms
•ÌýÌýÌý Assist in training the new employee
•ÌýÌýÌý Help the employee feel welcome and included

•ÌýÌýÌý Have a sincere interest in helping the employee
•ÌýÌýÌý Lead by example
•ÌýÌýÌý Good listener and sounding board
•ÌýÌýÌý Knowledgeable, flexible, and resourceful
•ÌýÌýÌý Values diverse perspectives
•ÌýÌýÌý Willing to provide constructive feedback
•ÌýÌýÌý Honest and candid
•ÌýÌýÌý Able to network and make connections
